Interactive walks will bring Cornish heritage to life

Cornwall-based production hub, Scary Little Girls, has been awarded Heritage Lottery funding to support their popular series of theatrical walks.

Living Literature Walks see audience members follow designated routes through a town, encountering various characters and events along the way which entertain and inform with local literature, arts, and history.

Scary Little Girls Creative Producer said: “These walks are about bringing culture to life. We take so much of our local surroundings for granted, but they’re often rich with fascinating facts and stories.”

The events, previously staged in St Austell, Fowey, Truro, London and Oxfordshire, have received great feedback. Now, a Heritage Lottery award will finance four new walks throughout the county.

In 2012 and 2013, Scary Little Girls will host walks around Falmouth, Mousehole, Penryn, and Penzance.

The first event, ‘Pens, paints, swords and ships – A Living Literature Walk through Falmouth Town’, will take place on the 8th and 15th of September as part of Falmouth’s Splash Festival.

The group is looking to collect oral histories and testimonies from residents of the four towns for use in their interactive performance walks. Using professional actors and members of the community, Cornwall’s rich heritage – its maritime history, art, and literature – will be brought to life.

Andrew continues: “The new walks will be bigger and better than ever, providing a unique insight into Cornwall’s history. Attendees will experience the duchy’s vast and varied cultural contributions in the valuable context of their surroundings.”

The Scary Little Girls are inviting people from the four towns to get involved with the project – be they performers, interviewers, interviewees, researchers, or any combination of the aforementioned.
