SLGP are currently looking to commission a dynamic, humanistic and talented playwright to create a new piece of matrifocal theatre that follows the Irish women of the suffrage and nationalist movements through the Easter rising of 1916. With this piece we are aiming to bring to warm, vivid reality characters such as Constance Markievicz, Jenny Wyse Power, Helena Moloney, Hanna and Frances Sheehy Skeffington and James Connolly.
We would like to capture the human stories of these people as well as the staggering events they lived through or in some cases to which they gave their lives. We are interested in the times they supported each other through trial and their times of great difference of priority, particularly over how much importance to give women’s emancipation within the nationalist struggle.
We hope to place these women, and the men who supported and fought with them, centre stage and to restore them to their rightful role in the Irish history with a full bodied and vital production.
