LIVING WORD WALKS

Living Word Walks

LIVING WORD WALKS...A UNIQUE EVENT THAT HAPPENS JUST FOR YOU!

A Living Word Walk is a site-specific event that is part self-guided tour, part promenade performance.  The audience are given a specially written route to follow and as they walk they encounter actors who perform 14-line poems or short extracts of prose as if they were mini-plays.

"...a really special event, full of fun and surprises."

Christabel A, London

The idea is inspired by Mark Rylance's Sonnet Walks for Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London but artists from Scary Little Girls have created walks for New York, London, Fowey and Liverpool that use writing by not only Shakespeare but Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Daphne du Maurier and many other classic and contemporary writers.

"Moving, inspiring and memorable."

Julia L, London

The walks celebrate their surroundings, encouraging the audience to see their city, town or area in a fresh way.  The walks can follow the biography of a particular writer, such as Elizabeth Barrett Browning's life in Victorian Marylebone, or embrace wider themes such as hidden histories and surprises in Downtown Manhattan.

"We loved the pleasant, artful blend of poems and the surroundings old and contemporary."

Annie and Katie, London

"It was fantastic. Impeccably researched, organized, written. New York never looked better."

Jimmy Roberts, New York

The actors invent their own characters to bring the poems to life.  They are encouraged to take modern living and the people they see on the street around them as their inspiration.  This way, the audience are constantly surprised by who the actors turn out to be.

"Really enjoyed it, loved the way people jumped out of their surroundings... I began to suspect everyone was about to recite me a sonnet."

Susannah P, London

The audience undertake the walk in small groups, no more than 15 people at one time, which ensures an intimate, engaging experience for everyone involved.  Walks set off every 15 minutes, so more than 100 people a day are able to take part.

"...such a closeness with people and events doesn't often happen in real life."

Flavio Gardini Architetto, Italy

The Living Word Walk is a highly adaptable idea which can take place anywhere.  Scary Little Girls Productions have recently been commissioned by FEAST to work in the South West to develop events based on the Living Word Walks.

"A really entrancing experience and a lovely, original idea."

Ruth S, London

It is possible to commission new writing for specific places on specific themes, as well as to research and collect existing material.  For Clamjamfry, an event which Scary Little Girls Associate Director Abigail Anderson directed for the Fleming Collection in Mayfair, two new short plays and a piece of music inspired by paintings in the Collection were commissioned.  For Sweet Witchery, which took place on a canal barge gliding through London on a Hallowe'en night, gothic writing from across the centuries was selected.

"What a delight.  The spontaneity and inventiveness of the event along with each actor's very unique gifts were totally appreciated by our entire group!"

Lynne Taylor, Los Angeles
