The Heroes Project

A Scary Little Girls Emotional Literacy and Anti-Bullying Workshop Programme for Years 5 & 6

Scary Little Girls recognise that our society can promote images of violence and violent behaviour as exciting and/or heroic.

This can be done through films, television, video games and a culture of war which often advocates aggression as a means to settle disputes or amass personal gain in the adult world.

This programme aims to provide children with examples of assertive, rather than aggressive, behaviour and to depict acts of bravery and collective heroism that both adults and children have displayed. These examples and acts provide a contrast to conventional depictions of violent, individualistic heroics that abound in popular culture. They also show young people that positive outcomes can be produced non-violently and that heroism is more profound when it is bloodless.

Scary Little Girls recognise that bullying and hate-crimes often stem from low-self esteem and an undeveloped awareness of the feelings of others.We have created this programme to tackle bullying and develop emotional literacy in 4 key ways:

·         By using role-play and interactive performances to build an understanding of the nature of bullying and the possibility for assertive management of bullying situations by individuals and groups;

·         By fostering inclusion and a strong sense of self-worth in all the children we work with, allowing them to participate actively and with increased confidence;

·         By showing the difference between assertive and either passive or aggressive behaviour as a means of dealing with emotions and bullying;

·         By using drama exercises and discussion techniques to allow children to experience processing and identifying their emotions.
