Bring the puppets to life

The Puppet Project: Week Four
Workshop leaders: 2
Participants: 10 - 15
Location: Classroom
Duration: Half and hour per half group, 1 hour total

In this session, the workshop leaders use the puppets the children have made to develop the emotional intelligence work of the first session. Discussions around relationships, what we want from our friends and what kind of friends we want to be ourselves are held in circle time.

The children speak through the puppet they have made, allowing them to explore their feelings safely and to engage their imaginations in the development of their puppets’ characters. This builds empathy, communication skills and emotional literacy.

This session meets Key Stage 1 Teaching Requirements in the following ways:

Citizenship, Choices
Enabling children to recognise that they can make choices; to share their opinions on matters that are important to them; to resolve differences by looking at alternatives, making decisions and explaining choices; think about what is important to them in making choices; to discuss their opinions with others and explain their choices; communicate the decision-making process visually; to discuss their views and communicate with others; that pressure to behave in an unacceptable way can come from a variety of sources, including people they know; to know that there are different influences on our choices; to describe the qualities of a friend; to recognise positive and negative peer influence and identify how they can support friends in decision-making; to recognise that their choices affect themselves and others.

Citizenship, Living in a diverse world
Enabling children to discuss and express their feelings using appropriate language; to recognise and respect each other’s needs and differences; to listen to and reflect on the words of others in the class.

Citizenship, Communication Skills
Years 1 & 2
Enabling children to describe what effective listening involves; to understand what is involved in effective listening; to listen to and respond to others; understand ground rules and give examples of what following them might mean.
