Training for teachers

This training begins with a piece of forum theatre. The three actors perform a short series of scenes displaying a incident of domestic violence and the possible responses from a neighbour and a teacher. In between these scenes, the workshop leader “freezes” the action and discusses with the group what is happening, what effect it is having on the protagonists and what they could do differently.

Taking direction from the group, the actors can re-run certain scenes to see how suggested changes alter the situation. This section of the training promotes empathy and facilitates a detailed discussion about domestic violence, its repercussions in a family and the role of others in dealing with it supportively and appropriately.

The second part of the training looks at what schools can do about domestic violence and uses discussion and simple exercises to establish best practice for schools in the following areas:

·         Giving practical support to students affected by domestic violence

·         Giving emotional support to students affected by domestic violence

·         Facilitating peer support

·         Providing information for survivors of domestic violence or those seeking help
